SOFY: Another Day In Paradise mixtape review
SOFY is very cool and edgy, and now possibly the second coolest music act out there in 2025 (Bilk are first). She has previously released absolute bangers like “Just Mates”, “Wet Paint”, “Egomaniac” and “Chamaeleon.” So, I go into her mixtape, Another Day in Paradise with high expectations. I like the title. It’s very positive and I like the cover, which is a bit psychedelic. The mixtape starts with “Sticky” and “Hush!” which both have a very “let’s get stoned in the living room” vibe to them and I know they’re going to be great in small venues. “Hush!” does drag slightly though and is probably the weakest song on the album. “togethertogether” is a woozy, Pale Waves-esque banger. “Mine” has a great billowing chorus that would be fantastic to snog your girl or your man to. “Desktop” is an excellent single, but I fear I may have heard it a few too many times now. “Pirates” is one of the highlights of the album. It’s the kind of song that makes you want to be in love when you hear it and be best played on an indie-style record player. “Giant Designs” is a “looking out the train window” beauty. “Front Seat Honey” is just an aesthetic. I feel like being a “front seat honey” should be the next “having a Brat Summer.” I can see it. Pink and orange seatbelts will become the next zeitgeist item to have. No longer will it be trendy water bottles paraded around the gyms, but neon seatbelts in the passenger seat of ya man’s whip. The album ends with “Floating Forever” which captures a moment in time. You do feel your feet come off the ground slightly listening to it because it does feel very floaty. It’s an interesting concept to grapple with as a mid-20s listener. It would be nice to just float forever, like Jez in Peep Show; never having to worry about money or what your purpose is on this earth. Or the idea that you can just float and be happy in a singular moment with someone you love or something you love, free from all complications and pain, and that’s all it is, a fleeting moment. But back to the album. SOFY has met my expectations. What’s great about the songs is that they make you feel edgy, cool, excited to be young and about the possibility of being in love. You feel like you are permanently riding a skateboard with an oversized t-shirt on. What’s not to like?
